More and more often, to be eligible for funding, you need to be able to publish IATI data. What is IATI and are you ready for it?

    Grant-making in international development cooperation and humanitarian aid is changing: governments and multilaterals joined the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) and are increasingly using the IATI Standard to exchange information on projects, programmes, finances and results. If you receive funding from the UK, The Netherlands or Belgium, you have already encountered the requirement to publish progress reports as open data in the IATI Standard. Other donor countries are preparing to follow their lead.

    What does this mean for you

    For many organisations, publishing in IATI is a prerequisite for funding, but they don’t know where to start. Data4Development has supported dozens of organisations, in the Netherlands and internationally, to take their first steps in understanding and working with IATI. We help them meet their donor obligations, but also move beyond that. There are many benefits beyond donor requirements: IATI data can be used to monitor partnerships and projects,  to explore opportunities for collaboration, or to publish project information into your website.

    For whom?

    The IATI starter training is specifically designed for organisations that want to start working with IATI to share information about their activities, enhance their transparency and meet donor requirements. If you want to become an IATI publisher but are unsure how to do this, this training is for you.
    The training is specifically aimed at those persons for whom publishing in IATI will be part of their activities, such as for instance PME(L) or Finance staff members. In addition, it may also be a good introduction for interested decision makers who would like to get a better idea of the why’s and how’s of IATI.

    Goal of the training

    At the end of the training you will:

    • Understand the goal of IATI and what you can use IATI for;
    • Understand the main concepts of an IATI publication and be able to work with them in practice;
    • Have developed a structure of your publishing activities (units), to be used as a base for your IATI publication;
    • Have made a practical plan on how to move your organisation forward with IATI after the training.


    Session 1: Setting-up IATI
    We discuss the use and main concepts of IATI and jointly work on how to structure activities. All trainees are asked to arrive at the training with background documents like an organisational chart and an overview of projects and other activities (this could be a donor report or annual report).
    - Introduction to IATI: Origins and goals, what it can be used for, examples of tools
    - Starting with IATI: Main concepts, organisational choices including risks and opportunities
    - Structuring: Mapping out the structure of how activities are linked
    - Into more detail: Understanding results and transactions

    Between sessions
    Trainees discuss the developed structure and possible challenges in their respective organisations and gather input and questions.

    Session 2: Return-day Starters training
    6-8 weeks after the initial training, all trainees come back with the input they gathered. We jointly work on answering questions and making a practical plan on your organisation’s way forward with IATI. This part includes steps to create buy-in in your organisation and a cost-benefit analysis for your organisation.

    Practical information

    Data4Development develops and organizes the IATI publishing starter training twice a year. The training consists of two 4-hour sessions and some 'homework' which helps you to make the most of the training.

    • Good to know: Trainings have a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 participants per training. If the minimum participants have not been reached in time, the course will be postponed.
    • Trainers : Each training will be guided by two Data4Development trainers:
      Rolf Kleef -Rolf has 25 years of experience in helping NGOs use new internet technologies. He has been working with IATI since 2011, and is a member of the IATI Technical Advisory Group.
      Anne-Marijke Podt Anne-Marijke has over 15 years of experience in training and moderating groups or teams of people in the International Development Sector. She has a background in ICT4D and Change Management.
